You’ve spent years building your reputation. You have a website. You have Google reviews. You might even rank on page one for a few keywords. But here’s a question that should keep you up at night: when a homeowner asks ChatGPT “Who’s the best plumber near me?” — does your business show up?
For most contractors, the answer is no. And they don’t even know it.
AI-powered search engines — ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot — are fundamentally changing how homeowners find and choose service providers. These aren’t futuristic predictions. Over 100 million people already use ChatGPT weekly, and a growing percentage of those queries are local service searches.
If you’re not showing up in these AI answers, you’re invisible to a rapidly growing segment of your market. The good news: you can check your AI visibility right now, in about 15 minutes, using the exact process we walk our clients through.
And if you want the fast track, our free AI Visibility Checker tool does it all automatically.
Why AI Search Visibility Matters for Home Service Businesses
Traditional Google search shows you 10 blue links and a map pack. You compete for position. The homeowner sees options and clicks around. That model still exists — but it’s shrinking.
AI search works differently. When someone asks Perplexity “Who should I call for AC repair in Tampa?” the AI doesn’t show 10 options. It recommends 2–3 businesses by name, often with a brief explanation of why each one is worth calling. If you’re one of those 2–3, you get the call. If you’re not, the homeowner doesn’t even know you exist.
This is the shift from search engine optimization to AI search visibility. Traditional SEO still matters — but it’s no longer enough on its own.
Step 1: Test Your Visibility in ChatGPT
Open ChatGPT (free version works, but GPT-4 with browsing gives more accurate local results). Type these prompts exactly:
Prompt Set A: Direct Business Search
- “Who are the best [your trade] companies in [your city]?”
- “Recommend a [your trade] company in [your city] with good reviews”
- “I need emergency [your service] in [your city]. Who should I call?”
Prompt Set B: Comparison Queries
- “Compare [your company name] vs [competitor name] for [service type]”
- “Is [your company name] a good [trade] company?”
- “What do customers say about [your company name]?”
What to Look For
Record every response. You’re looking for three things:
- Are you mentioned by name? If ChatGPT names your business, you have baseline AI visibility.
- Is the information accurate? Check the phone number, address, services listed, and any claims about your company.
- Are your competitors mentioned instead? Write down every competitor that appears. These are the businesses currently winning the AI recommendation game in your market.
Most contractors who run this test for the first time discover something uncomfortable: their competitors are being recommended while they’re completely absent.
Step 2: Test Your Visibility in Google Gemini
Google Gemini matters more than any other AI for local search because it’s integrated directly into Google Search via AI Overviews. When a homeowner searches Google and an AI Overview appears at the top of the results, that answer is powered by Gemini.
To test, go to gemini.google.com and use these prompts:
- “Best [trade] companies in [city] with 5-star reviews”
- “Who should I hire for [specific service] in [city]?”
- “Top-rated [trade] contractors near [neighborhood or zip code]”
Then go to Google Search itself and try the same queries. Look at the top of the results page. If an AI Overview box appears, read it carefully. Is your business named in that AI-generated summary?
Gemini pulls heavily from your Google Business Profile, your website content, and your review corpus. If your GBP is incomplete or your website is thin on content, Gemini has nothing to work with — and it will recommend your competitors who do have that information.
Step 3: Test Your Visibility in Perplexity
Perplexity is the fastest-growing AI search engine and the one most likely to directly replace traditional Google searches for service discovery. Go to perplexity.ai and run these queries:
- “Find me a reliable [trade] company in [city]”
- “What [trade] company in [city] has the best reviews?”
- “I need [specific service] done at my house in [city]. Who do you recommend?”
Perplexity is unique because it shows its sources. After every answer, it lists the exact web pages it pulled information from. This is incredibly valuable for your audit because you can see exactly what content the AI used to make its recommendation.
If your website isn’t in those sources, you know exactly what the problem is: your site doesn’t have the kind of authoritative, structured content that AI engines pull from.
Step 4: Score Your Results
After testing all three platforms, give yourself a score using this framework:
- Mentioned by name in all 3 platforms: Strong AI visibility. Focus on accuracy and competitive positioning.
- Mentioned in 1–2 platforms: Partial visibility. You’re on the map but there are clear gaps.
- Not mentioned in any platform: AI-invisible. This is the most common result for home service businesses, and it means you’re missing a growing channel of leads.
- Mentioned but with wrong information: Worse than invisible. AI is actively sending leads elsewhere because it thinks you’re in the wrong location, offer the wrong services, or have poor reviews.
Why Most Contractors Are AI-Invisible (And Don’t Know It)
The reasons are consistent across every audit we run. If you’re not showing up, it’s almost certainly one or more of these issues:
1. No Structured Data (Schema Markup)
AI engines rely heavily on schema markup to understand what your business is, where it operates, what services you offer, and what customers think. Most contractor websites have zero schema markup. The AI literally cannot read the signals it needs to recommend you.
2. Thin Website Content
A 5-page website with “About Us” and “Contact” pages gives AI nothing to work with. The businesses that get recommended have deep, authoritative content: service pages, city pages, FAQs, case studies, and educational articles that establish topical authority.
3. Low Review Velocity
AI engines weigh review recency and volume heavily. A business with 47 reviews from 2023 will lose to a competitor with 120 reviews and 15 new ones in the last 30 days. Review velocity — the rate at which new reviews come in — is one of the strongest AI ranking signals. Our guide on why contractors are invisible on Google covers this in depth.
4. Incomplete Google Business Profile
Google Gemini and AI Overviews pull directly from GBP data. If your profile is missing service categories, hours, photos, Q&A responses, or regular posts, you’re handing the AI recommendation to whoever has a more complete profile.
5. No Authoritative Backlinks or Citations
AI engines use the same trust signals that traditional search uses — but they weight authority even more heavily because they’re making a direct recommendation, not just showing a list. If your business isn’t cited across directories, industry sites, and local news, the AI has no third-party validation to work with.
What to Do After Your AI Visibility Audit
If your audit revealed gaps — and it almost certainly did — here’s the priority order for fixing them:
- Complete and optimize your Google Business Profile. This is the single highest-leverage fix. Fill every field, add photos weekly, respond to every review, post updates. Our GBP setup guide for contractors walks through every step.
- Add schema markup to your website. At minimum: LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, and Review schema. This is how AI engines read your site programmatically.
- Build content depth. Every service you offer needs its own page. Every city you serve needs a location page. Every common customer question needs an answer on your site.
- Accelerate your review velocity. Implement a systematic review request process. AI engines want to see consistent, recent reviews — not a burst from 2 years ago.
- Clean up your citations. Ensure your NAP (Name, Address, Phone) is consistent across every directory, social profile, and listing.
The businesses winning AI search in 2026 aren’t doing anything magical. They’re doing the fundamentals better and more consistently than everyone else — and they’re doing it with AI visibility specifically in mind.
